A subdued palette allows natural light and shadow to animate the interior, creating a calm, comfortable home that evolves gracefully with time.

This project is best understood through light—how it shifts from morning to evening, how it grazes a curve or settles into a seam.
Soft timber arcs lift everyday rituals without announcing themselves. Hidden hinges close with a muted confidence. Nothing asks for attention, yet everything has been carefully resolved. Good joinery, in my experience, is rarely loud. It nourishes the space quietly.
As raw timber moves through the living area, the room takes on a grounded calm. The grain—unlabelled, unforced—unfolds like a natural drawing, reminding us that no two surfaces are ever the same. We shaped the furniture edges with a subtle rise and fall, not unlike a distant ridgeline. It’s a small gesture, but one that carries time within it. These are the details that make a space feel settled rather than styled.
The backdrop to the sofa is finished in Canadian hard maple veneer. The choice was deliberate. Maple doesn’t dominate a room; it steadies it. Its pale tone and matte surface soften the architecture, filtering visual noise and allowing the room to breathe. There’s a humility to this timber—it adapts rather than conquers.
Hard maple grows slowly in cold climates. That density gives it resilience, which matters in a living space meant to be used, not preserved. As a veneer, it balances durability with a tactile warmth that invites touch. Strength, when handled well, can feel gentle.
The television wall continues this conversation. Plant oil–finished timber carries a resin-like depth, while cool metal lacquer lines add precision. Rounded edges soften the metal, allowing it to coexist rather than compete. Here, metal becomes a pause in the timber composition—necessary, measured, and intentional.
